Statement from the Canadore College
Canadore College continues to build on its dynamic future as it enters a second phase of renewal in 2012.
“As a college, it is our mandate to constantly renew and predict marketplace demands so we can produce skilled and knowledgeable graduates to support strong and emerging economies,” said Canadore College President George Burton. “Industry looks to us as experts to educate the next wave of employees, and we have a responsibility to meet that need.”
In order to meet that need, program and service revitalization is a necessary and regular course of business. The renewal process is driven by market demands, enrolment trends, strategic direction, student needs and graduate employment rates.
Program evolution has resulted in four layoffs. This morning, affected staff and faculty members were met individually and have been offered the supports available to them through the College.
“We will continue to position ourselves for capacity and growth by strengthening our program mix in response to student, graduate and employer needs,” said Burton.
Canadore is actively developing programming that reflects marketplace needs regionally, provincially and globally. The College is exploring diversification and expansions in aviation, advanced manufacturing, media, design and dramatic arts as well as health and wellness.
Since January, Canadore has received funding approval from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities for its Digital Cinematography Advanced Diploma and Environmental Management Graduate Certificate. The College is also awaiting funding approval for its Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant Diploma, as well as a First Nations Child Welfare Advocate Graduate Certificate to be delivered in partnership with the Anishinabek Educational Institute (AEI).
Changes to Canadore’s program offerings will take effect at the end of the Spring 2012 semester.
