Train for a career in this important health field in Canadore’s leading-edge simulation nursing laboratory. The lab is equipped with interactive mannequins that speak and replicate real symptoms, on which students act out common medical emergencies. Training culminates with a seven-week, pre-graduate placement experience working with a registered practical nurse. Our nursing graduates are sought-after all over the world working independently or as part of a health care team.


Bridging option: Successful graduates have a bridging option to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Admission Requirements: 

Program Prerequisites

OSSD or equivalent. ENG4C or ENG4U, any Gr 12 Math (C) or (U), Biology Gr 11 or 12 (C) or (U), (SBI 3C, SBI 3U, SBI 4U), and one (1) of the following sciences: Chemistry: Gr 11 or 12 (C) or (U), (SCH 3U,SCH 4U, SCH 4C); Physics: Gr 11 or 12 (C) or (U), (SPH 3U, SPH 4U, SPH 4C).


Priority of Admissions  

The Council of Regents for the Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology has established priorities for admission according to the following order of preference:

  • permanent residents of Ontario
  • permanent residents of other Canadian provinces and territories
  • students from other countries


Selection Procedure

  • Offers to the program are based on academic strength which is calculated by averaging the submitted marks of required subjects to meet eligibility. If more than one mark is received for a required subject, the highest mark will be used in the calculation.
  • Ten (10) additional marks are added to each post-secondary course used in the calculation of academic strength.

Students require Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training Level C, which must be completed to be eligible for field placements. All associated costs are the responsibility of the student.


A police check is required annually and can be obtained from the police department upon payment of a fee; all associated costs will be the responsibility of the student. If you have been convicted of an offense under the Criminal Code for which you have not been pardoned, you may be ineligible for field/clinical placements.


 

From Personal Support Worker Program:

Applicants are required to be a graduate from Canadore College’s Personal Support Worker program within five years from the Practical Nursing start date that they are applying for. In Addition, applicants must have graduated with at least a 3.5G.P.A to be considered for the Practical Nursing Program. When more qualified applications are received by February 1st (for Fall Intakes) and October 1st (For January Intakes) than we have program seats available, we will use formal scoring and ranking methods to determine final selection. The final selection will be based on grades and ranking of the following courses: PSW180, PSW165 and CMM125.

Clinical Placement: 

Prior to starting the program and on an annual basis, clinical placement requirements are mandatory for all students in clinical placement/clinical practicum courses including health forms, vaccinations, CPR certification, Mask Fit Testing and criminal reference check. In addition, on an annual basis, students must provide evidence of an Influenza Vaccination. Students who fail to provide documents by provided deadlines will not be allowed to register for their prospective clinical placement/clinical practicum courses.

Canadore College reserves the right to place students in any clinical or field placement or combination of placements that are determined to be appropriate. Students must be prepared to travel to and from placements and/or relocate at their own expense for all or part of the placement.
