Overview

Mental Health Across the Lifespan - HIB4T (College Course: HSP165)

This course offers an introduction to the basic concepts related to mental health and mental illness. It takes a lifespan perspective moving from mental health issues that occur from birth to death. This course also introduces what abnormal behavior is, how it is assessed, and how it is classified using appropriate diagnostic tools.

Introduction to Substance Abuse – HDX4T (College Course: MHA180)

This course provides an introduction to the history of substance use, including its social and economic context. The course outlines various theories of substance use from their origins to present day, highlighting the cultural and societal influences that impact use patterns. This course examines the most prevalent drugs, the common myths surrounding addiction, and the state of current drug policy in Canada. An overview of substance abuse screening and assessment, treatment settings and approaches, and concurrent disorders is considered.

Delivery: Fall 2024 - College Drive Campus / West Parry Sound Campus

Note:

  • Tuition, materials, equipment and transportation fees will be covered through the Dual Credit program.
  • All students are expected to attend an orientation session prior to taking part in any Dual Credit program.
  • Students will be contacted by the SCWI Program Assistant, at least one week prior to the start of the program, to be provided with a date, time and location for each orientation session.
  • Students involved in this program will be excused from their regular classes or co-op to attend the College.

Students who may need learning opportunities outside of high school and who would benefit from a college or apprenticeship experience to complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Dual credit programs can help students transition from high school to college and apprenticeship programs. They can help students complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma while customizing their learning with exposure to the college environment.

Students have the opportunity to:

  • Earn high school credits while studying at a local college or taking apprenticeship training
  • Gain experience in the transition to postsecondary education or apprenticeship
  • Get a head start on learning and training for their future careers.
