Community Apiary Buzzing with Activity this Spring
Apr 27, 2017 | Laura Peddie, West Parry Sound Campus
West Parry Sound Campus Manager Dr. Peter Istvan represented the Parry Sound and Area Community Apiary at the Ontario Beekeeper’s Association Spring meeting. He presented to over 175 attendees on the main purposes of the apiary, how it was established, and various stories from the first year in operation.
In the spring of 2016, the Parry Sound and Area Community Apiary was established at the West Parry Sound Canadore College Campus, made possible by funding from the TD Friends of the Environment and Crofter’s Organic. With this funding honeybees, hives, and beekeeping accessories were purchased.
In the apiary’s first year, hundreds of students from the Parry Sound area received education about honeybees, then a visit to the apiary, followed by honey tasting. Once completed they officially became Honeybee Ambassadors, receiving a certificate of completion. The apiary is looking forward to another busy year of tours and education; with three local classrooms already booked to visit in May and Introduction to Beekeeping running on May 27th.
