Program: Social Service Worker
Placement: The Village – College Drive

For Jayde Yerkie, experiential learning at Canadore meant discovering the impact of connection in real community settings.

As a Community Connector at The Village, she supported older adults by encouraging social engagement, assisting with programming, and building meaningful one-on-one relationships. From welcoming participants to facilitating activities, her role focused on promoting independence, confidence, and belonging.

“Working with older adults showed me how meaningful it is to build relationships rooted in patience, kindness, and genuine care. Their stories, resilience, and humour made every interaction purposeful.”

Jayde chose Canadore because of its strong balance of theory and hands-on learning. Her coursework connected directly to her placement experience, allowing her to apply classroom knowledge in meaningful environments while gaining confidence working alongside professionals and clients.

A graduate of Canadore’s Mental Health and Addictions Worker program, Jayde saw the Social Service Worker program as a natural next step in her journey. The program strengthened her commitment to advocacy, social justice, and supporting individuals so they feel seen and heard.

Through her placement, Jayde learned how thoughtful programming, presence, and empathy can shape meaningful experiences for older adults. The skills she developed continue to influence how she approaches relationships, opportunities, and community work today.

Her advice to future students is simple: show up consistently, ask questions, and lead with empathy. Experiential learning isn’t just about gaining skills - it’s about discovering the kind of professional, and person, you are becoming.
