Miller Technology, a mining equipment manufacturer headquartered in North Bay, has been collaborating with ICAMP for a decade.

“They have been a great partner to help us alleviate some of the risk around new product development,” said Hugh McDermid, Vice President, Product and Business Development. “They’ve helped Miller learn about new technology and where the technology is evolving to, and they removed some of the barriers to entry in trying out that technology in our product.”

The Innovation Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping (ICAMP) at Canadore College provides end-to-end support for organizations involved in product development and innovation. Recognizing the diverse needs of its clients, ICAMP offers flexible access to advanced manufacturing facilities and a team of skilled professionals.

Services include technical consultation, equipment training, and the execution of full-scale research and development projects. Through its commitment to technological advancement and industry collaboration, ICAMP enables companies to transform concepts into viable products using cutting-edge tools and tailored solutions.

“We have used other avenues to do that development in the past but, for us, it turned into more of a vendor-client relationship not a collaborative experience where we can actually learn the subtleties of the technology,” said McDermid. “We don’t get to understand how, if we change the design a certain way, it could increase efficiency or decrease cost, things like that. That’s where ICAMP has really helped us develop our internal knowledge of newer processes and manufacturing.”

“We actively ask our clients: ‘What technology would be valuable to you? How can we make it accessible?’ This collaborative model allows businesses to explore and test advanced tools before making a major investment. It’s a hands-on, low-risk way to discover what works best for their operations,” said Gavan.

"One of the core reasons we created ICAMP was to help businesses understand and adopt new technologies," explained Brad Gavan, Director of ICAMP. "Early on, during one of our first exploratory tours, Miller introduced us to the idea of a waterjet cutter. That moment really highlighted what ICAMP is all about -- it's not us deciding what equipment to bring in, it's industry telling us what they need.”
