❱❱ What we mean by EDI in Applied Research

Equity is the removal of systemic barriers so that everyone has fair opportunity to access & benefit from research. Equity recognizes that people do not all begin from the same place and requires tailored actions to close gaps.

Diversity is the presence and value of difference across identities, lived experiences, disciplines, and ways of knowing. Diversity expands how we define problems and how we discover solutions.

Inclusion is the practice of ensuring every person belongs, is respected, and is empowered to contribute meaningfully. Inclusion turns representation into participation and impact.

We embed equity, diversity, and inclusion across the research life cycle with clear and practical actions that strengthen the quality, relevance, and impact of applied research.

Build diverse teams

Recruit beyond traditional networks and bring together people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences. Support inclusive cultures by creating open feedback channels and offering bias awareness training so that everyone can contribute meaningfully.

Design inclusively

Ask research questions that reflect varied realities and take intersectionality into account from the beginning. Ensure that study designs consider the experiences of all groups who may be affected by or benefit from the research.

Collect data accessibly

Use sampling strategies that include underrepresented groups and provide research tools in multiple languages and accessible formats. Remove barriers to participation so that all voices are represented.

Analyze through an EDI lens

Examine data through an equity, diversity, and inclusion perspective. Disaggregate findings by relevant demographics and interpret results collaboratively with diverse teams to minimize bias and deepen understanding.

Mobilize knowledge with communities

Share research findings in accessible and meaningful ways. Work with community members and partners to co-create dissemination materials and ensure that knowledge reaches those who can benefit most from it.

Mobilize knowledge with communities

Plan budgets that reflect commitment to inclusion. Allocate funds for accessibility supports, translation, childcare, transportation, and fair compensation for knowledge holders and community partners who contribute expertise.

Practice ethical respect

Ensure that all research practices are grounded in respect for individuals and communities. Provide accessible consent processes, follow cultural and community protocols, and secure community-based approvals where appropriate.

Practice ethical respect

Track participation, experiences, and benefits across diverse groups throughout the project. Use feedback and evidence to adapt continuously, ensuring that research remains inclusive, relevant, and responsive.

Imagine a time, long before the roads were paved, before buildings stood tall, when this land was covered with tall trees, clear waters, and the quiet strength of nature. This place, where Canadore College now stands in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, was and is still the home of the Anishinaabeg people.

For generations, the people of Nipissing First Nation have walked these paths, guided by the wisdom of their ancestors, living in harmony with the environment and honouring all aspects of creation as sacred.

As we reflect on this history, we recognize that our journey here is a small part of a much longer story. Canadore College, where we work, learn, and connect with others, is located on these traditional lands within the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850.

Acknowledging this is not simply about naming a treaty, it is about honouring a relationship that has endured for generations.

To us, this land acknowledgment is more than words; it is a commitment. It reminds us that every step we take here rests on land that carries the memories and hopes of the Anishinaabeg people. It encourages us to engage with our shared history with respect, to listen carefully, and to build a future based on partnership, understanding, and mutual respect for the First Peoples who continue to care for this land.

With that in mind, it is our privilege to represent the Canadore Research Centre, where our work in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Applied Research reflects not only academic excellence but also a deep respect for community, culture, and ethical responsibility.
