    We also offer a facilitator project, equipping educators, leaders, and changemakers with the tools to guide others in integrating sustainable happiness principles into classrooms, workplaces, and community initiatives.

    Note: Must successfully complete the 20-hour Sustainable Happiness Course to be eligible to apply as a facilitator.

    Dr. Catherine O’Brien

    Founder, Sustainable Happiness


    Dr. Catherine O’Brien introduced the concept of Sustainable Happiness in 2005 which merges sustainability principles with happiness and well-being. Her definition of Sustainable Happiness as “happiness that contributes to individual, community, or global well-being, without exploiting other people, the environment, or future generations” led to the world’s first course on the topic at Cape Breton University in Canada in 2009. Catherine’s work has been the inspiration for similar courses nationally and internationally. Her research and writing are widely cited, including Sustainable Happiness: How happiness studies can contribute to a more sustainable future, as well as Education for Sustainable Happiness and Well-being, published through Routledge. She is the co-editor of Living Schools:Transforming Education, published through the Education for Sustainable Well-Being press. The highly successful Sustainable Happiness Semester journal, co-authored with Sean Murray, is being used in colleges and universities across Canada and recently translated into French through the support of Colleges and Institutions Canada (CICAN).  Dr. O’Brien frequently lends her expertise to introduce sustainable happiness education as an avenue for developing personal and professional well-being.

    Chris has earned national and international recognition in education, drawing on expertise in wildlife & fish management, education, and leadership training. He directed Dawson College's Office of Sustainability in Montreal until 2025 and co-developed the Sustainable Happiness Certificate with Dr. Catherine O'Brien. He received the Governor General of Canada’s Meritorious Service Medal for engaging people of all ages in action projects that advance well-being for all.

    Luisa Montes is a clinical psychologist specializing in child and adolescent behaviour. She has taught at several universities in Mexico, has a diploma in community theatre, and has designed programs which seek to create violence-free female identities through personal empowerment. She has experience in producing radio and internet TV broadcasts, is a published poet, and has an interest in the welfare of all living things. Luisa is the Sustainable Happiness Certificate representative for Latin America.

    Jennifer De Vera, BA, MEd

    Jenn de Vera was an entrepreneur for 16 years, founding and operating “Ethan’s Playground”, a successful pre-school in Montreal and now anchors the Sustainable Dawson movement at the College. She brings her dynamic work ethic and organizational skills to the Sustainability Office and is, amongst other responsibilities, coordinating volunteers, planning major events, making sure the Dawson gardens and beehives are thriving, and outreach is taking place in schools from pre-kindergarten to universities. Jenn has a BA in Community Studies and a Master of Education in Sustainability, Creativity and Innovation. She has completed her Sustainable Happiness Facilitator training certification and has co- led a peer-to-peer SH introductory course in 2020 for Dawson support staff. She is an avid gardener and biker.

    Jonathan Cerdas, co-founder of Green Communities, is a leader in sustainable tourism and hospitality with over 20 years of experience. Trained in Business Tourism in Costa Rica, his work integrating clean technology into coffee production earned recognition from the National University (UNA). A Rio+20 UN speaker, Jonathan led Green Communities to win the World Coffee Challenge in 2022 -the first such win for Costa Rica with organic coffee. He also founded Tamí Lodge and Santos Tour and has spoken internationally across Canada, the U.S., and Costa Rica, advancing responsible tourism and regenerative development.

    Rebecca is a Sustainable Happiness co-facilitator with over 15 years of experience in communications, digital strategy, and community engagement at Canadore College. In her role as Student Government Coordinator, she works to foster a vibrant, inclusive campus community, empowering student leaders and enhancing the student experience. A long-standing member of Canadore’s Sustainability Taskforce, Rebecca brings a deep commitment to environmental and community wellbeing to all she does.

    Discovering Sustainable Happiness was a turning point in her life - it ignited a passion to help others cultivate joy, resilience, and purpose while caring for the planet. Guided by the belief that personal wellbeing and the health of the Earth are inseparable, she is passionate about creating spaces where people are inspired to live in harmony with both.

    Project Leader, Living Sustainability Centre

    Jesse’s work focuses on carbon reduction, food and water security, and hands-on innovation - from hydroponic grow pods to a scaled clean water demonstration site. Under his leadership, Canadore became the first Canadian college to earn both FSC and SFI forest certifications and achieved a gold AASHE sustainability rating. A national Living Lab project leader and Sustainable Happiness facilitator, Jesse also manages Farm 17 in Costa Rica and co-founded Farm 17 Coffee Co., a coffee brand creating meaningful opportunities for students to engage in sustainable development abroad.
