Long-Term Care

Canadore College’s Long-Term Care Home Project

  • Canadore College’s Long-Term Care Home Project represents an innovative model of integrated health care and education. Conceptualized as both a supportive home for residents and a living classroom for future healthcare professionals, the project will bring together compassionate care and hands-on learning in one modern, collaborative environment.

Residents will receive high-quality, person-centred care delivered by skilled nurses, personal support workers, therapists, and other dedicated professionals who will prioritize physical, emotional, and social well-being. The result will be a warm, safe, and uplifting atmosphere where individuals feel supported, respected, and at home.

In addition, the Long-Term Care Home Project will offer Canadore students invaluable real-world experience. Working alongside seasoned practitioners, learners from multiple health and wellness programs will build practical skills, deepen their understanding, and contribute meaningfully to resident care.

This unique model highlights Canadore’s commitment to holistic well-being, exceptional learning environments, and a strengthened continuum of care for the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Villages Community Care Group, a non-profit organization led by Canadore College, is proposing the development of The Village 2, a 160-bed long-term care facility on Canadore’s College Drive Campus in North Bay.

This facility represents Phase 2 of Canadore’s broader Village Project. Phase 1, The Village, opened in 2018 as an innovative health and wellness training facility that integrates interprofessional education with Indigenous, Eastern, and Western healing and wellness practices.

The Village 2 is designed to become an integral part of Canadore’s College Drive Campus, located within close proximity to the College’s existing health and wellness programs and services. While the long-term care home will operate independently, its location fosters strong and meaningful synergies between the facility and the campus community.

Residents will have access to a range of established support services offered through The Village, including Indigenous and traditional learning spaces, holistic mental health supports, a mobility clinic, a dental clinic, and practical nursing and respiratory therapy resources. This proximity enhances the quality of life for residents while also creating enriched, hands-on learning opportunities for Canadore students.

One of Canadore College’s key strategic priorities is to establish itself as a Learning Centre of Excellence, advancing education, innovation, and research focused on the care and well-being of an aging population. Canadore’s leadership in developing The Village 2 reflects its commitment to addressing the growing needs of the aging population in North Bay, the Nipissing District, and surrounding communities. Several colleges across Canada operate long-term care homes as part of their academic and community service mandates.

The facility will support the physical, social, spiritual, and emotional well-being of residents while serving as an essential training environment for students in Canadore’s School of Health Science and School of Human Care and Social Services. Through this project, Canadore aims to improve community health outcomes and expand experiential learning opportunities for future care professionals.

Construction timelines remain tentative, as the project must first receive several approvals before the work begins. Canadore College is committed to moving The Village 2 forward and is actively working through the required approval processes.

Seasonal conditions required that initial site preparations begin in the fall to help minimize disruption to local trees, plants, and wildlife. These early activities ensure that environmental impacts are managed responsibly and in accordance with best practices.

To date, Canadore College has received approvals related to parking relocation, site planning, and environmental assessments. Additional approvals are in progress.

Decisions regarding municipal infrastructure - including sidewalks, sewer systems, and street lighting - are the responsibility of the City of North Bay. Canadore has worked, and will continue to work, closely with the City of North Bay and other appropriate external organizations to ensure alignment and collaboration where needed. For more information on municipal infrastructure, please visit the City’s website at https://northbay.ca/.

The College manages its campus forest under a 10-year Comprehensive Forest Management Plan (2024–2034) developed through a yearlong assessment and aligned with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification standards. This plan guides sustainable land use, biodiversity protection, replanting, and long-term forest health. While limited tree removal was required to support construction of the long-term care home, the College is committed to replanting and restoring green space following construction, consistent with certified forest management practices and the long-term stewardship goals outlined in the plan.
