Assessment

Assessment is the observation and documentation of students' course work to determine knowledge and skill. The following types of assessment are commonly used in higher education:

Diagnostic
The observation and documentation of students' course work to determine existing knowledge and skills that can be used to set initial learning goals.

Formative
The observation and documentation of students' course work to determine learning progress and set next learning steps and goals.

Summative
The observation and documentation of students' course work to determine the extent of learning mastered by the end of a set period of time.

Evaluation
The judgement (e.g. grade, pass/fail) made about the achievement of learning based on the assessment of the students’ course work.
