Loyalist College issued the challenge, and Canadore College has accepted. And now the competition is on to see who can collect the most socks to donate to the homeless.
It’s all part of the “20K Sock Day” charity initiative by We Be Us, a program that focusses on donating clean, dry clothing to homeless people. The goal of this campaign is to collect as many new pairs of socks as possible and donate them to local shelters. Canadore’s “Warm Their Soles” sock collection campaign is well underway.
“We called homeless shelters, and they said that the number one thing they need is socks,” said Eleisha Collins, Canadore College Students’ Council Vice President of Operations. “There’s a lot of homelessness in North Bay, so we wanted to take up the challenge.”
Donations are being accepted at each North Bay campus:
- College Drive, in The Welcome Centre at College Drive
- Commerce Court, in the Admissions Office
- Aviation Campus, the Front Office, and the CSC, Panther Sport and Wellness Rep Office
- Residence, C15 Office
Collections will also be made at this weekend’s varsity basketball and volleyball games.
“People can pay $2 and they can throw a pair of socks into the bin,” said Collins. “If they get it in they can win a prize from CSC. That $2 they donate will go to getting another pair of socks.”
The weekend schedule is as follows:
Saturday, February 15, 2020
Men’s Basketball Canadore vs Redeemer-3 p.m.
Women’s Volleyball Canadore vs La Cite-6 p.m.
