Canadore College’s gymnasium was filled with vibrant displays of Indigenous culture on Saturday as students, employees, and community members gathered for the annual pow wow. The event provided an opportunity to experience traditional dancing, singing, and storytelling.
“We invite everyone to participate, enjoy the performances, and engage with the teachings shared throughout the event,” said Gerald McComb, Cultural Advisor at Canadore’s First People’s Centre. “The pow wow has always been a student-driven gathering, created by students for students.”
For many participants, involvement in the pow wow was a meaningful way to connect with and preserve their heritage. Tehya Leonard, a Biotechnology Technician student from the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, emphasized the importance of cultural continuity.
“I feel it’s important to be involved in the preparations because it shows that people my age are committed to keeping our culture visible and widely recognized,” Leonard said.
Kadin Hemeon, an Environmental Protection and Compliance student who is a member of the Red Rock Indian Band from northwestern Ontario, echoed this sentiment. “Being part of this event is important to me because it represents my culture,” said Hemeon. “It’s essential to keep these traditions alive and support them.”
McComb says the pow wow has a broader significance in education and building community. “Hosting a pow wow allows everyone to learn about Indigenous traditions firsthand,” he explained. “It also provides an opportunity for attendees to connect with the Indigenous community, knowledge keepers, and service providers. For students, it’s a chance to relax, socialize, and enjoy themselves, while community members -- especially those from out of town -- can reconnect with friends and family.”
The annual pow wow continues to be a cornerstone event at Canadore College, fostering cultural awareness, education, and community engagement.
