From El Salvador to Canadore: My Journey in Business Accounting
Apr 29, 2025

My name is Cecilia, and I am a proud graduate of Canadore College's Business Accounting program and an employee of Canadore College in the Finance Department. My journey from El Salvador, a small Central American country, to a thriving Canadian institution has been challenging and rewarding.
My passion for numbers was ignited by my father, a certified accountant, and further fueled by my work experience with him.
Several factors motivated me to study abroad. I wanted to expand my knowledge, acquire new skills, and improve my English proficiency. I believe that studying abroad is an incredibly enriching experience personally and professionally.
I selected Canadore College's Business Accounting program for its comprehensive curriculum and opportunities to explore related fields like finance, taxation, and payroll. Additionally, the college offers modern facilities and the availability of student residences. North Bay is a fantastic city for students, offering a peaceful and productive environment, as well as amazing natural attractions like Lake Nipissing.
Initially, I was taking classes online due to the ongoing pandemic in 2022. While this presented some limitations, the college's technology allowed me to participate fully in my courses. In my final semester, I was able to attend classes in person, which was a rewarding experience. Connecting with my classmates and professors face-to-face was incredibly fulfilling.
Adapting to North Bay's winter climate was a significant challenge, especially for someone accustomed to the tropical climate of El Salvador. However, with time, I learned to appreciate the beauty of winter and the unique experiences it offers.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience has been meeting people from diverse cultures. I've realized how much we can connect and grow when we embrace our differences.
