The Innovation Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping (ICAMP) at Canadore College is marking a milestone. It’s been 10 years since the not-for-profit innovation centre opened its doors. ICAMP’s mission is to promote the growth and success of Canadian industry by providing direct and cost-effective access to the latest in advanced manufacturing technology, expertise, and practices. To date, it’s helped 500 companies complete more than 1100 projects.
“Industry is telling ICAMP what it wants to build and create, and ICAMP is helping businesses test out their ideas,” said Canadore President and CEO George Burton. “ICAMP stands as an example of what can happen when people work together.”
ICAMP offers services that include product design and prototyping, 3D printing, advanced robotics, advanced simulation, additive manufacturing, and virtual and augmented realities. It operates as an independent business-facing unit within Canadore. It offers its clients and partners year-round service; access to applied research funding; a secure facility with comprehensive applied research capabilities and a commitment to protecting clients’ intellectual property; and the ability to leverage Canadore’s shops and labs to support businesses through all phases of the product or process development or refinement to increase productivity.
Where ICAMP serves mature companies wishing to have technical personnel conduct applied research on their behalf, the new Concept Development Lab (CDL) will serve start-up or young companies who wish to participate directly to develop their idea. The Lab is a partnership between ICAMP, Innovation Initiatives Ontario North (IION), and MakeIT Centre.
“The Concept Development Lab will be the place where new and young companies can make use of equipment and access to engineering resources to advance their products,” said Brad Gavan, Director ICAMP, Corporate, Community, and Alumni Partnership. “Entrepreneurs will have the opportunity for hands-on participation in the design, development, and testing of their innovative ideas using specialized equipment under the guidance of qualified technical personnel.”
“Canadore remains committed to experiential learning, so client companies could find themselves working in the lab at the same time as our students,” said Burton. “The Lab will work together with the Canadore Entrepreneurship Academy on technical assistance, and the Entrepreneurship Academy will then collaborate with industry partners to get the products to market.”
