Statement on the Missing Children of the Kamloops Residential School

May 31, 2021

The Canadian flag at the Canadore College Residence has been lowered today to honour the lives of the 215 children lost at the Kamloops Residential School. It will continue to fly at half mast for nine days; one hour for every child lost.

Our hearts go out to the people of the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation, the survivors of residential schools, and all the families and communities who are grieving, and looking for answers to this tragedy.

We encourage students, employees and community members to take a moment of silence this week, and to wear an orange shirt to recognize and honour the experiences of Indigenous peoples in the residential school system in Canada, and to join together in the spirit of reconciliation.

There is support available for anyone affected by the effects of residential schools, and anyone who is triggered by these latest reports. The Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS) can be contacted toll-free at 1-800-721-0066.

A 24-hour national crisis line has been set up to provide support – access emotional and crisis referral services by calling 1-866-925-4419.

For students who may need support, Canadore’s Student Success Services can be contacted through studentsuccessnow@canadorecollege.ca or by voicemail at 705-474-7600 ext 5205.
