Walkerton Clean Water Centre (WCWC) Professional Development

Sep 7, 2018 | Steph Romaniuk, Environmental Management

Canadore was one of the first colleges to get involved in a partnership with the WCWC. We are grateful to be invited each year to take 12 students from the Environmental Technician and Environmental Management Programs down for free PD with a travel subsidy to further their knowledge and hands-on experience in being a drinking water treatment operator; one of the many career paths for our graduating environmental technicians and managers.

The training was an excellent professional training experience with math, hands on lab work and theory wrapped up nicely to see what you are actually doing in practice as an operator! The have a scaled down treatment plant there that you can test different treatment scenarios with. They have mobile labs too that travel the province to help treatment facilities troubleshoot their operation difficulties, e.g. lead or iron in water, high acidity, etc.

Students also had the opportunity to visit the area, the nation's oldest microbrewery in Canada in nearby Neustadt, and the contaminated well site and memorial of those affected by the Walkerton e-coli tragedy.
