Start Date: August 18 to October 24, 2025 followed by an 8-week paid placement
End Date: Dec 19, 2025
Location: Canadore College, Commerce Court Campus

Skilled workers trained in modern manufacturing and machining processes are  in demand.

Train to learn all aspects of the operation of numerous industry standard machines including drill presses, surface and cylindrical grinders, CNC mill and lathe, and horizontal and vertical band saws.

Program Description:

A General Machinist cuts, shapes and finishes metal to make precision machined parts and components used in all areas of manufacturing. Learn all aspects of the operation of numerous industry standard machines including drill presses, surface and cylindrical grinders, CNC mill and lathe, and horizontal and vertical band saws. 

This full-time program will take place in-person on weekdays. An 8-week paid work placement will follow the in-class sessions. Participants who complete their training will receive credit for completing Level 1 along with health and safety training, such as WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, and Working at Heights. Plus, you'll gain valuable work experience!

Canadore College will supply you with all the necessary textbooks, tools, and PPE, and transportation and dependent care may be available to you on a case-by-case basis.

What You Will Learn:

  • Trade Calculations/Math
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Working at Heights, Lock Out/Tag Out Certification
  • Level One General Machinist (429A) including operation of vertical and horizontal milling machines, layout equipment and procedures, measuring equipment and inspection techniques, basic metallurgy and heat treatment and safe working practices
  • Secondary Trade Exposure – Welding
  • Work Placement (8 weeks)

Future Opportunities:

Upon completion of the program, students may pursue employment in the automotive, mining and aircraft manufacturing industries as an apprentice

Application Requirements

  • Participants must be a minimum of 18 years of age, have a minimum of Grade 12 (or equivalent) and be eligible to work in Ontario.
  • A photo, scan or copy of the secondary school transcript or diploma (or equivalent) is required*.
  • Collection of Personal Information & Consent form is required.

*If you don’t have a copy of your transcript or diploma, you may request a copy by contacting your high school, board of education or adult training centre. Please start this process as soon as possible, as it can take up to two weeks to get your transcript.
