Researcher Profile: Dr. Vimal Savsani
Dr. Vimal Savsani is a Mechanical/Civil Engineering professor at Canadore College. Vimal completed his Bachelor's (B.Eng) in Mechanical Engineering and Master's Degree (M.Eng) in Mechanical Engineering Design. Vimal completed his Doctoral studies in Mechanical Design Optimization and extended research as a Postdoctoral fellow at Thompson Rivers University, BC, Canada. During his Doctorate studies, he developed a novel metaheuristic algorithm known as 'Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO),' one of the incredibly powerful optimization algorithms for engineering design applications. During his post-doctoral fellowship, he also developed several techniques for solving mechanical engineering design problems that the research community has appreciated well.
Vimal has over 17 years of teaching and research experience at various universities worldwide. He has completed various research projects including the development of Siemens Center of Excellence, funded by the Government of Gujarat; the development of multi-objective optimization techniques for engineering design applications, funded by NSERC, Canada, at Thompson Rivers University, BC; low-cost renewable energy driven water treatment solutions, funded by DST Government of India; feasibility analysis of offshore wind power potential, a research project with Government of Gujarat; ride comfort analysis of three-wheeled vehicle, an industrial project with Atul Auto Ltd.; analysis of power transformers, Industrial project with ABB, India; solar power prediction for Ontario, a project carried out at the University of Toronto; planning layout for a wind farm, an industrial project with Suzlon, India; and Structural topology optimization, a research project in collaboration with KhonKaen University, Thailand.
Apart from this, Vimal has published more than 80 papers and two books based on his research. He has supervised more than 20 Master's and 3 Ph.D. thesis students.
With this extensive knowledge, Vimal presented at various recognized conferences organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and Institute of Electricals and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in Canada, Russia, USA, Australia, and India. He was also celebrated for having more than 8000 citations for his research work and an h-index of 30. The most remarkable achievement of his research is getting recognition in the list of top 2% researchers/scientists globally in Energy and Mechanical Engineering. This he considers a reward for all the hard work dedicated towards research in the last 12 years.
For Vimal, once a researcher, always a researcher. With this mantra, he continues to build his research experience at Canadore College. He loves to guide his students in understanding research processes and working on projects. He is hopeful to see additional industrial collaborations, especially with local industries, that will help solve challenging industrial problems. Industrial collaboration also allows students to work on applied research projects, providing them with experiential learning opportunities and preparing them to enter the workforce as well-rounded graduates.
Ultimately, Vimal would like to see the development of research facilities for mechanical and civil engineering students, as one of the best aspects of being at Canadore is the flexibility in work and research. Vimal loves teaching as it gives him a sense of satisfaction by contributing to the training of future engineers. He likes that he equips his students with the skills and knowledge to fulfill the needs of today's industry. It also helps him remain young and vibrant as he explores different dimensions of teaching-learning. At the end of the day, Vimal wants his students to understand the primary research process, data collection and analysis. For Vimal, research is a fun and exciting way to find conclusions that work for individuals.
