Can Simulation Save Lives?
The ability to recognize and respond to a deteriorating adult or paediatric patient is critical to prevention of poor patient outcomes. Simulation is one teaching/learning strategy that can prepare nursing students as they plan to transition to practice. Recognition and response to hemodynamic instability, respiratory distress, cardiac arrest, a massive hemorrhage or a paediatric seizure has the potential to save patient lives. In this presentation, results of several recent research projects will be highlighted to demonstrate the impact of simulation and the need for further multi-site collaborative research. The aim is to create a dialogue about next steps in simulation research, collaboration and teaching innovation. Participants will be challenged to consider how to collaborate across sites to advance the patient safety agenda through simulation.
Body Interact- A New Way of Teaching- Spectrum Nasco (V315a - Village Flex Room)
Spectrum will present an interactive way to teach using Body Interact. Body Interact provides clinical education through virtual patients, built with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Outcomes include improvement in critical thinking and clinical decision-making. Body Interact has set a new standard in competency education and meaningful assessment. Training becomes safe and dynamic with Body Interact's virtual patients. Students learn not only the facts but also the important,“how's" and "why's" based on the patient's interactions, while tracking performance and competence achievements through each simulation.
Extended Reality in the Experiential Age- Rob Theriault (D302)
Some predict that we are about to transition from the information age to the experiential age with Extended Reality (XR), a term that encompasses virtual, augmented and mixed/merged reality. These nascent technologies are poised to teleport students from the classroom to new, immersive and interactive worlds. The question on the minds of most health educators is whether these experiences will be novel or truly transform learning. In this session, we will discuss how XR will add to experiential learning.

Nursing in the Home, Together. Intraprofessional Collaboration- Colleen Piekarski and Catherine Boudreau (D301)
In the workshop, we will describe an intraprofessional (RPN & RN students) nursing simulation, featuring the use of a simulated participant that is carried out in the home health care context. The interdependent roles of care coordinator and home health nurse are explored in this simulation. The workshop will allow participants to learn about the benefits of intraprofessional collaboration as well as the benefits of working with simulated participants in scenarios. Biigiiweyan - Cindy Hare, Perry McLeod-Shabogesic (V318a - Smudging Room)
Biigiiweyan “Coming Home” is an Indigenous Interprofessional Cultural Safety Training Program. The program targets the training of health care professionals and students, with a focus on Indigenous peoples and the cancer care journey, from prevention to end of life/after life care. Biigiiweyan uses Indigenous ways of knowing and relating to redefine Interprofessional education as well as live actor simulation to train health care professionals and students to offer culturally safe healthcare to Indigenous peoples. This workshop will target the respectful creation of a culturally relevant and safe simulation process.
Simulation Using Augmented Reality- CAE (Village Flex room)
With rapid technologic advances and an increasing array of devices that support augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), their value and application in healthcare training are of great interest. This session looks at recent advances in AR/VR technology, examples of how they are being used in healthcare simulation and key learning/best practices around incorporating it into training curricula. Join us for hands-on demonstrations or AR/VR applications launched by CAE.
Labour, Birth and Post-partum Hemorrhage Simulation: A Nursing Student Perspective- Miranda Gillingham and Stephanie Spencer (D322)
Participants will take part in a hands-on learning experience using a realistic birthing simulator. Participants will be engaged in a high-fidelity birth simulation followed by postpartum hemorrhage.
Using H5P to Create Online Simulations- Laura Killam and Sarah Wendorf (D301)
Interactive online simulations have been found to be effective, engaging, and equivalent or superior in quality when compared to traditional approaches (Duff, Miller, & Bruce, 2016). Yet, the cost of these simulations may be a barrier to their implementation. In this session, participants will learn about ways to develop healthcare simulations using a free open-source web-based tool: H5P. Combining video and interactive technology, we replaced face-to-face family visits with simulated family visits. This allowed us to lower the costs for both the department and students. Working with faculty members, a Multimedia Specialist and two Instructional Designers, we developed a series of interactive scenarios for students using branching and linear logic.
Participants are encouraged to bring a web-enabled device to participate in online interactive activities. During this session, participants will be walked through the planning phase of developing an H5P simulation for their own context using a script and volunteer actor from the audience.
By the end of this session participants will a) discover why H5P may be useful for simulation creation, b) identify how to create a simulation in H5P, and c) create a process map, video and interactive simulation using H5P.
Immersive Simulation- Lifecast, iSimulate and Immersive Interact- Echo Healthcare (D302)
Full simulation immersion replaces real-world surroundings by creating the perception of being physically present in a non-physical world. Users are then able to suspend disbelief and fully engage in the simulated environment. This workshop will explore elements that increase immersion and engagement in simulated settings through: physical interaction, uniformity of vision, physical and haptic feedback, narrative engagement, sense incentivisation, cohesion of surroundings.
Q-CPR- Laerdal (D302)
Using our new Laerdal Little Anne QCPR manikins, this workshop focuses on quality CPR using live feedback software that educates the learner on depth, recoil and proper rate. From single person CPR to two person CPR, the software allows for engagement and excitement while learning best practices. The "race" at the end will put people to the test while having fun! Create your own Educational Virtual Simulation Games- The Easy and Cost Effective Way- Marian Luctkar-Flude, Jane Tyerman, Tammie McParland, Michelle Lalonde (D322)
Virtual Simulation Games (VSGs) are an effective and accessible alternative or adjunct to live simulations in healthcare education; however, it can be expensive to develop or purchase access to commercial VSG products that may not align directly with intended learning outcomes. This 60-minute workshop immerses participants in a user friendly and cost-effective process for developing a virtual simulation game (VSG). Participants will create one decision point and response based on a desired learning outcome, write a brief filming script for the decision point, film video game clips using a Go-Pro camera and iPhone, and learn about assembling a game using the CAN-Sim VSG template which uses Articulate software. This process has been used to develop a series of short VSGs used for pre-simulation preparation, as well as longer stand-alone VSGs on a variety of topics.
Bringing Simulation to Life with Moulage- Karen Paquette
This interactive workshop will give applicants basic training to help enhance realism in simulation scenarios. You’ll be taught beginner techniques and simple tricks to create common medical conditions. The training will also include discussion on advance techniques and mediums that can be implemented. Participants will also have an opportunity to work with simple mediums for a hand-on exercise. (limit 16 participants)
Don’t Be Afraid to Talk about Death! - Camille Lemieux (D336)
This engaging seminar will talk about death and the role of a funeral director. What are the funeral options that are available for your loved one? We will learn together how the Funeral Director program introduced learning via simulation in most of its courses. Don’t be afraid! Participants will also have the opportunity to see the first Mortuary Model mannequin (by SynDaver) in Canada!
