COVID-19 Coronavirus Frequently Asked Questions

Canadore College recognizes that students have many questions about the current COVID-19 situation and will try to answer those here. Please remember access to Canadore College campuses continues to be restricted until April 21st, 2020. To comply with recommended physical distancing protocols, we are requesting students to remain off campus. Student services and academic support will continue to be offered remotely or virtually; you will find information about accessing these services in these Frequently Asked Questions:

COVID-19 Coronavirus Frequently Asked Questions as of April 15, 2020

Physical (social) distancing measures are being put in place throughout our community to help prevent and slow the spread of COVID-19.  This is important so a large number of people do not get sick at the same time by preventing and slowing the spread of COVID-19 from person-to-person.  Physical distancing involves taking steps to limit the number of people you come into close contact with. The earlier these social actions start the better protected we will all be. Physical distancing does not mean you must stay in your homeYou can still go outside to take a walk, or walk your dog.  If you need groceries, you can go to the store.  It is recommended that while out in public you make sure to maintain a distance of two metres (six feet) from people around you.

Ontario has declared a state of emergency and require all non-essential business to close including all recreational programs and libraries, all private schools, all daycares, all churches and other faith settings and all bars should be closed. Restaurants are to shift to takeout/delivery. In order to assist with these measures, the College has moved to a restricted access process for the campus, however, our services and academic delivery have temporarily moved to online via iLearn versus in-person models.  Canadore operations will continue remotely with programs and services being offered through alternative means. Until April 21, access to buildings is limited or unavailable.

Self-isolation means staying indoors and avoiding contact with other people.  If you have travelled internationally, you will need to self-isolate.  Public Health has further instructions to self-isolate if you have symptoms such as fever, cough and shortness of breath, before you get tested for coronavirus and while you wait for the test results, and if you have a positive test result for the coronavirus.

Unfortunately, we are not in a position to allow students entry into the building to clean out lockers due to the limited access restrictions currently mandated.   If there is a critical need to obtain items in your locker, i.e. prescriptions or something you believe is required for academic purposes please contact your program coordinator prior to sending the request to security.  Most of these requests have been denied because electronic access to the academic material (books) has been provided either through the department, student success services, online library resources, or other.  As for the rest of the items in lockers, the building is secured and although we cannot fully guarantee anything in a locker, the College is doing what it can to safe guard the entire campus.

Together with the Canadore Students’ Council, the college has created an emergency fund to provide financial assistance to students in need.  The fund is open to all students.  Students need to apply to the following email: finaid@canadorecollege.ca. The application process is very straight forward and results in electronic fund transfers being made to students in varying amounts depending on evidence of need. The fund considers provision for items such as rent, food, technology, or other.   As of today, our team has responded to many requests and we can assure that there is no unmet need.

The college has also extended tuition payment deadlines, set up emergency food stocks for families living in residence and established emergency on-campus housing for students who need to relocate from the community.

We are also mobilizing to support community agencies, recognizing that some of our students and their families access community supports.

Canadore continues to plan for the return to campus of students enrolled in programs with a practical component to complete. Based on the current precaution measures, and in order to help our students plan for their return to campus, the earliest possible date is now Tuesday, August 4, 2020.

Additional details will be communicated by the concerned program teams. Our semester completion planning is focused on our student needs and best interest while monitoring developments and ensuring adherence to health and safety standards which remains to be our utmost priority.

For iLearn assistance please direct all emails to iLearnSupport@canadorecollege.ca, as a team is available to help direct and support your inquiries
